The default behavior when content marketing is first attempted is to write something, publish it on the website, share it once on social media, and wait for an audience to find it. This approach will produce very little traffic regardless of the quality of the content. A new website publishing content in a competitive space does not have the domain authority to rank in search, does not have the audience to generate meaningful social engagement, and does not have the distribution infrastructure to reach the people who would benefit from the content. The content exists but nobody knows it exists.

Distribution is the set of deliberate actions you take to get your content in front of people beyond your existing audience. For a content piece just published, this means emailing your list, posting it across your social channels with platform-specific captions rather than a generic copy-and-paste, sharing it in relevant communities and forums where the topic is discussed, reaching out to people you quoted or referenced in the piece to let them know they were featured, and pitching it to relevant newsletters in your space that aggregate content for their subscribers.

Email is the highest-leverage distribution channel for owned content because the subscriber has opted in and the message arrives directly in their inbox rather than competing in an algorithm-sorted feed. Every piece of substantive content you publish should be shared with your email list with a brief introduction explaining why it is worth their time. A list of even a few hundred engaged subscribers will drive more initial traffic to a piece of content than the same piece sitting on a website with no active distribution.

Community distribution, sharing content in relevant online communities such as Reddit, Slack groups, LinkedIn groups, and industry forums, is one of the highest-return distribution channels for content that genuinely serves the community's interests. The qualification is genuine: communities have low tolerance for promotional content dropped by accounts that never participate in any other conversation. Build a reputation in relevant communities as someone who contributes value, and the content you share will be received very differently than the same content shared by an account that only appears when it has something to promote.

Repurposing is the distribution strategy that multiplies the reach of every content investment without requiring proportional additional creation. A blog post becomes a newsletter section, a LinkedIn article, a thread on Twitter, a short video summarizing the key points, and a graphic with a key statistic that performs well on Instagram. Each format reaches a different audience in a different context. The underlying research and thinking happened once. The distribution formats are adapted rather than created from scratch.

Content distribution is not the afterthought you do after the real work of writing. It is half of the work, and the businesses with the widest reach in their categories are almost universally the ones that invest as much attention in getting content in front of people as they invest in creating it.
