When someone searches for a local business in your category on Google Maps, or asks Google to find something near them, the listings that appear are Google Business Profiles. Without a verified profile, your business may not appear at all, or may appear with incomplete, inaccurate information you cannot control. The first contact many prospective customers have with your brand is not your website. It is your Google Business Profile appearing in a map result, showing your hours, your phone number, your photos, and your reviews.
Claiming and verifying your profile is free and takes about twenty minutes. Go to business.google.com, search for your business, and claim or create your listing. Google verifies ownership through a phone call, a text, or a postcard to your business address. Once verified, you control everything that appears in your listing and can update it instantly when anything changes. Unverified listings can be claimed by anyone, including competitors, and can display incorrect information that you cannot correct.
Fill out every available field without exception. Business name, category, service area, phone number, website, hours, and business description all affect how prominently you appear in local search results. The description is your chance to be specific about who you serve and what makes your business the right choice. Generic descriptions that could apply to any business in your category produce no differentiation. Specific descriptions that speak directly to what your customers are searching for do.
Photos are the most underused element of most Google Business Profiles. Listings with photos receive significantly more clicks and direction requests than those without. Upload a minimum of five: your location or workspace, examples of your work, your team, and anything that helps a prospective customer visualize the experience of choosing you. Update your photos as your business evolves rather than leaving the same images up for years.
Reviews are the credibility signal that most affects whether a prospective customer contacts you or your competitor. Respond to every review promptly. Thank positive reviewers specifically. Address negative reviews professionally and without defensiveness, because the prospective customer reading the exchange is evaluating how you handle problems as much as they are evaluating the complaint itself.
A Google Business Profile is not optional for any local business. It is the foundation of your local digital presence and the signal that search engines use to determine whether to show you to the people already looking for what you offer.
