The first contact can be a short message through the form, a phone call, or the longer intake form if you would rather write everything down before speaking. The intake form is worth the twenty minutes it takes, because it means our first conversation starts at strategy rather than at background. But it is not a hurdle. A three sentence message saying what you do and what is not working is enough to start.

What I need from you in that first conversation is honesty about the parts that are not working, which is harder than it sounds when you are talking to somebody you have just met about a business you are proud of. Where the customers currently come from. What you charge and whether it feels right. What you have already tried and what happened. The number in your head that you are not sure is realistic. Those answers determine whether the advice is any good, and there is no version of this where a polished summary produces a useful plan.

After that I put together what I actually think you need, in what order, with a price. Sometimes that is smaller than what you asked for, because the thing you named is not the thing causing the problem. Occasionally it is a recommendation to spend nothing with me and do three specific things yourself first, which is a real outcome rather than a rhetorical gesture. If we proceed, we agree scope and sequence before anything is built, and you own every account from the day it is created.

Fit matters in both directions and it is worth naming what makes it a no. Businesses well past their first year are usually better served by somebody who works at that stage. Anybody looking for a provider to take the whole thing away and report back quarterly is going to be frustrated, because this only works when the owner stays involved in the decisions. And if somebody wants a specific deliverable built without any conversation about whether it is the right deliverable, that is a fair thing to want and I am the wrong person to supply it. In each of those cases I would rather say so in the first conversation and point you somewhere better.
